_Return to Cranford_ on the Internet.

I was able to catch the first episode of _Return to Cranford_ when it was broadcast a while ago, but missed the second episode. However, they're both available (at least for a while) on the PBS website. Here is the link for episode 1: http://video.pbs.org/video/1380421882/ and for episode 2: http://video.pbs.org/video/1384538881/ It's as charming as the first part of the series. Enjoy!

Tonight at 9 -- Louisa May Alcott: the Woman Behind Little Women

Louisa May Alcott, ca. 1857. Wikipedia.
Taking a break from costume articles (after having taken a break from them for Christmas), I finally confirmed the essential information about the new documentary about Louisa May Alcott! Little Women was one of my favorite books when I was younger, as it was for many other kids, and I have always wanted to know more about its author, who modeled Jo March after herself. The documentary, Louisa May Alcott: the Woman Behind Little Women, will be broadcast today, December 28, 2009, on PBS, beginning at 9 p.m.

Bringing in a Victorian costume bit, it looks – from the commercials – that the costumes for this film will be fairly historically accurate. Like the similar documentary from last year about Isabella Beeton, this may turn out to be a film that will be worthwhile to purchase when it comes out on DVD. I will be looking for it!

Jane Austen on PBS tonight!

image from AntiqueClipArt.com
It seems that PBS is replaying the Masterpiece Classic Jane Austen series this year! According to the website, Persuasion will be broadcast tonight at 8 p.m. on KTEH, which is on Channel 9 and 54 in my area.

This will be the new (2008) adaptation with Sally Hawkins as Anne Elliott. Here is the web page for this adaptation: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/persuasion/

It's really warm inside right now -- we don't have A.C. -- so I will have the windows open to catch the breezes, and a glass of iced tea at my side, as I watch this tonight!
Now stir the fire, and close the shutters fast,
Let fall the curtains, wheel the sofa round,
And, while the bubbling and loud-hissing urn
Throws up a steamy column, and the cups
That cheer but not inebriate, wait on each,
So let us welcome peaceful evening in.
-- William Cowper (1731-1800)
